About Us
Background:
The official logo of our Club is the 'Skull and cross bones' alias the 'Jolly Roger' symbol. The Club has a long history for both Swimming and Water Polo. The Club was founded in 1929 (and affiliated to Leinster Branch in 1936). Although the official name of the Club is 'North Dublin Winter Swimming Club', the Club has also been referred to/known as 'North Dublin Water Polo Swimming Club'!!
The club was originally based in the old Clontarf baths until its closure in 1995. The venue was used for the clubs annual Christmas morning swims since the foundation of the club, hence the name North Dublin Winter Swimming Club.
Why Play Water Polo?
Swimming is a great way to get fit and healthy. However, while many people enjoy swimming, some find swimming up and down a pool boring and lonely. If you are one of these people then water polo might just be the sport for you. Water polo is a team sport that provides a fun way to incorporate all of the benefits of swimming along with some added strength, technique and skill.
The sport itself incorporates similar rules to a number of different sports. It has been described as 'football in the water'. With a goal at either end, it is a fast paced game requiring a high level of fitness. As a result, there is no limit to the number of substitutions that can be made in a game and players can be substituted back into a game at any time. This means that it is an ideal development sport for juniors as everyone gets a game.
