Swimming

North Dublin Winter Swimming Club is not just a club that participates in water polo. As the club's name suggests, we started out as a swimming club in 1929 in the Clontarf baths. One of the main traditions of the club is the Christmas morning swim which has taken place annually since the founding of the club.

Initially the swims took place in the Clontarf baths but as the years progressed and with the closure of the Clontarf baths, the Christmas morning swim has taken place at a number of locations (mainly the North Bull Wall in Clontarf). Throughout the early years of the club, the Christmas morning swims were not just a dip like today's swims. In fact, the club held races for two cups (the Scully and the O'Reilly cups) which are still swam for today although in the warm confines of a swimming pool!

These are not the only races the club runs. The club has run in-club races throughout the course of the year since its inception. Nowadays these races are held during the club's session in Guinness' pool on Sunday mornings. Along with these races, the club runs a Championship series for Juniors and Seniors. Each series is broken down to 4 events (Butterfly, Back Stroke, Breast Stroke and Free Style) with the Senior's swimming 100 metres and the Juniors swimming 50 metres. Each leg of the series is run on a seperate day to the others and the winner is decided by the number of points accumulated from their placing in each leg of the series.

In addition to our indoor races, the club holds a number of outdoor races during the summer months for its members. These races have run for many years and are held on the North Bull Wall. The club also holds an open sea swim during the summer months for both men and women. This race is run as part of the Leinster Open Sea Swimming series in which the club has a strong tradition of competitors. North Dublin has had a number of winners in the Open Sea swim "Majors", with no less than 12 Liffey Swim winners (which currently stands as the most number of wins), the most recent being Gerard Wilkes' win in 2014.

A number of the club's members, led by Kevin Prendergast, went one step further and swam the English Channel in relay on the 11th of August 2010. This swim was done in aid of Temple Street Childrens Hospital in Dublin. The swim consisted of two teams of four men. Each man was required to swim for 1 hour at a time. The participants were as follows: Kevin Prendergast, Jeff Hopkins, Paul Byrne, Jimmy Seery, Mick Kenny, Stevie Nolan, Eamon Cope and Matthew Cope. The lads managed to raise â‚¬18620 for the charity which is a fenominal achievement.

A number of the club's members took part in the annual Warrior of the Sea event in Sligo in 2013, with North Dublin member Grant Carroll winning the event.

This event is a gruelling 6km swim that requires high levels of fitness and the club was well represented at this event with Jimmy Seery, Jeff Hopkins, Paul Byrne and of course Grant competing.

In the same weekend, Kevin Prendergast took part in the first swim around Skellig Michael Rock. This 2.8km swim was the first of its kind and the club would like to congtratulate Kevin on this achievement.

You can find out more about Kevin's swim here.

The club also had success in the 2013 Liffey Swim, with the club picking up Team Prize. The Team Prize award is given to the club with the 4 highest combined finishes. The winning team members were Kevin Prendergast, Paul Byrne, Jeff Hopkins, Bernard Sweeney. This feat was then replicated in 2015 with Bernard Sweeney, Gerard Wilkes, Jeff Hopkins and Stephen O'Brien bringing home the prize.

The next major swimming success for the club came in 2016, when Bernard Sweeney won the Lough Dan 10km swim. This national title came of the back of a very successful year for the club, with a number of Team Prizes won (including the Island and Dun Laoghaire Harbour swims) as well as Conor Turner picking up Fastest Time in the 2016 Liffey Swim.

The Club has since gone from strength to strength in the Sea Swimming circles. 2018 brought some terrific success with a Gavin Nolan picking up a Dun Laoghaire Harbour win (his 2nd win of the Summer), Bernard Sweeney picking up the win in the Island Swim, the inaugural Tom Cope Memorial Cup and of course our 1st full Ladies Swim team regularly competing on a weekly basis.
