North Dublin virtually always had a reputation for producing top young water polo players. Many of these players went on to represent the Club's Senior team as well as the Junior and Senior Irish National teams. The fact that the Club's name is on virtually every Junior/Senior trophy in the country is testament to this. However, over the past number of years this reputation began to dwindle mainly due to the loss of a home, firstly in the Clontarf baths and then more recently in St. Paul's Swimming Pool. The loss of these home bases meant that the club was constantly in different pools without ever establishing a home.
However, the club found a more consist base in the form of the Guinness pool in Dublin's Watling Street on Sunday mornings in 2012. In the Summer of 2013, in an effort to improve the Junior setup within the Club, the committee decided to start up a Junior Academy for the the upcoming season. The idea was to provide a session that catered for Junior players of all levels.
With a plan devised and a pool found in Trinity Sports and Leisure, Donaghmede, the Junior Academy got the green light. There was a big media drive to promote the Academy, with posters, newpaper adverts and even a radio interview from Club member Jamie Cope. This media drive was to prove crucial in getting people down to the Academy.
The Academy began in September 2013 and ran every Tuesday night right through to Christmas. Such was the interest from parents/kids that a second term got the green light and this term ran from January all the way till the end of May 2014. The number of players to attend the Academy was tremendous (on average 30-40 kids per session). A number of the Academy players also came along to the Sunday morning sessions in the Guinness pool to further there playing experience.
The level of coaching at these sessions are top notch and include past and present first team players as well as current and former Senior Irish international players. With the popularity of the Academy, we fully intend to run it for the upcoming season, so should your child/children be interested get in touch via the Contact Us link below for more info.
