It was a proud weekend for North Dublin as Gerry Wilkes won the 95th Liffey Swim and Bernard Sweeney won the Swimmer of the Year award.

 

Gerry was being tipped by many before the race as a potential outsider to win it but few could have imagined just how well he swam on the day. WIth a handicap of 6:45, Gerry had a fair bit of work to do to take the lead in the 2.2km course which ran from the Rory O'More Bridge to Custom House Quay.

 

Having finished 2nd over 20 years ago, Gerry has been determined to pick up a 1st place finish since. Having swam a race time of 34:49, it was a massive swim from Gerry that was well deserving of the victory. It makes Gerry the 2nd winner from his family after his father, Derek Snr. (Bimbo to all of us), won the trophy in 1989.

 

In the much anticipated race for Swimmer of the Year, Bernard Sweeney left no one in any doubt as to who would win it. With a handicap of 7:45, Bernard swam a solid 34:55 to finish in 3rd place and thus guaranteeing a long awaited Swimmer of the Year title for North Dublin. The award is well deserved after the long hours of training put in over the last 12 months.

 

The best Open Sea calender year for many years for North Dublin was fittingly capped off in style this weekend and the club couldn't be more proud of the two lads. Well done boys, enjoy your moment in the sunshine. UP NORTH DUBLIN
